Saintly Summer Jolt of Faith 6/12 – Saint Anthony of Padua: Humility, Miracles & Wisdom
As we continue, our Saintly Summer in Jolts of Faith, it brings us to our second saint, also so happens to be my patron saint, Saint Anthony of Padua. And Saint Anthony is probably one of those best known saints, but there’s a lot more to him than just praying to him when you lose your car keys or can’t find something.Saint Anthony was a phenomenal preacher. It was a great theologian, and Saint Anthony was also born of noble blood in Portugal, but when he decided to become a Franciscan in Italy, he found himself at the bottom of the ladder, but that was not a problem for the saint. He humbly accepted those positions until Saint Francis himself realized Anthony’s wisdom, his intellect, and his theology, and made him the teacher of theologians to the new Franciscan order.
And what I like about Saint Anthony is even though God gave him all these great gifts of being a great preacher, a worker of miracles, a great theologian, he was not afraid to humble himself to serve his brothers, and I think it’s a powerful lesson for you and I. Sometimes we all want the acclaim, we all want the accolades, we all want to be in the spotlight. But maybe where God is really calling us to serve is like Saint Anthony, in the most humble places so that we can put into practice what Jesus himself said in the gospel.Take the lower place so you can be raised to the higher place.A powerful lesson, I think Saint Anthony can continue to teach all of us, even in our day and time.
