This past weekend’s gospel reminded us of one of Jesus’ profound sayings: “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, render unto God what is God’s.” While Jesus used this to evade a debate with the Pharisees and the Herodians, it offers a valuable lesson for all of us. We all strive to balance our worldly obligations – work, family, community – with our spiritual obligations to God. Often, the demands of the world overshadow our commitment to God. But as Jesus reminds us, we must find that balance. We must give to the world, but it’s the world’s. We must also give to God, what is God’s. Since we are created in His image and likeness, God should always be our priority.
