Make Lent Real: Week Two – The Real Purpose of Fasting | 2/26/26

Week Two of Lent brings a different kind of challenge. This isn’t about the big thing you gave up on Ash Wednesday. It’s about choosing one small, daily comfort — something that’s part of your routine — and surrendering it for the next seven days. Not to prove how strong you are. Not to check a box. But to grow in self-control and freedom.

In this message, you’ll learn:
• Why fasting is about more than discipline
• How small sacrifices strengthen your ability to resist sin
• The connection between comfort and spiritual weakness
• How giving up something small can help you overcome pride, bad habits, and unhealthy attachments
• What real Lenten fasting should be forming in your heart

When we learn to control small appetites — scrolling, that afternoon latte, the small indulgences — we train our hearts to say no to the bigger things that pull us away from God. That’s the kind of fasting Lent is meant to be about.

Make Lent Real: Week Two – The Real Purpose of Fasting | 2/26/26

For week two of Lent, the challenge is to give something up and we’re not talking about that coffee or giving up desserts or alcohol, or whatever, we chose at the beginning of Lent. But for the next seven days to concentrate on, giving up a comfort. Maybe it’s scrolling, maybe it’s that latte I need every afternoon in the office, maybe it’s a dessert I’ve really liked, but some little comfort that is part of my daily life that is going to be a little hard. It’s gonna be a challenge. It’s going to hurt a little bit to give that comfort up so that by learning to control my appetite, my desire, is it can also learn to control those bad words. I can learn to control my need to be loved, I can learn to control my pride. My friends fasting is not just about discipline and showing how strong we are it’s about learning to control those bodily appetites we all have. Those ones, especially that we know lead us into sin. So this week as we give up that little comfort, it makes us stronger in giving up those other things that lead us further away from God. That’s the kind of fasting Lent really needs to be about.
