Jolt of Faith 4/3 – Lent Almsgiving: Transform Selfishness into Selfless Service & Deepen Your Faith
As we continue looking at the practices of Lent, it gets us to Almsgiving, helping those in need. Now, Almsgiving is much more than just throwing some loose change in the poor box, it really is, again, a change of perspective.I think most of us realize so much that we spend so much time taking care of my needs, what I need to do, what I need, what I want, that it’s very easy to overlook and forget about the needs of others. And time and time again in the Gospel and the Old Testament, the scriptures remind us that almsgiving, taking care of the needs of others, covers a multitude of sins. Because it gets us out of our own headspace, and it makes us aware and responding to the needs of others. And my friends, that’s a crucial thing, not only during Lent, but for every day of the week.
You know, taking care of the needs of others is that important shift we all need.Because as we all know, we can be pretty self absorbed. We can be pretty selfish. And Lent is a great time to acknowledge that and to change that. How can I integrate into these remaining days of Lent a spirit of worrying about the needs of others? Whether it’s giving consistently week after week to my favorite charity, whether it’s helping someone, a neighbor, take their trash out, is a form of almsgiving. There’s little things that I can do, not just at extraordinary times, but everyday to put the needs of others before my own needs. Because my friends, as we all know, the battle for holiness is a battle against the self. That selfish instinct that can exist in all of us that we need to fight against. When I concretely put the needs of someone else and take care of them before my own, that’s a big jump for all of us on that road to holiness. Not a sermon, not a homily, just that little Jolt of Faith we all may need.
