Jolt of Faith 3/27 – Turn Daily Inconveniences into Spiritual Penance | Embrace Grace This Lent

As during this Lenten season, we continue to look at some of the various practices of Lent, it gets us to penance. I don’t know about you, but the very word penance is always kind of intimidating.I think of

of the saints who used to scourge themselves or wear hair shirts or undergo physical suffering as penance. And while that’s very laudable and extraordinary, I think for most of us, that’s not real appealing. But penance doesn’t just need to be physical suffering. Penance can be some of the daily inconveniences, some of the hardships, some of the difficulties I face day in and day out. And when I offer to the Lord as a penance, I can help sanctify them, rather than to be a point of my impatience, my aggravation or my anger. For instance, I’m probably not the only one, but I hate waiting in traffic. Being stuck in a traffic jam just makes my impatience go through the roof. But what I’ve tried lately is to offer that to Lord as a penance. Say, Lord, you know, I really don’t like this. You know, this is driving me crazy, but I’m gonna offer this to you as a penance. I find that I’m more patient, I’m less irritable, and it’s much easier to endure however long the traffic jam may last. For instance, waiting in a store where the cashier is just taking longer and longer, and the line’s getting bigger and bigger. For most of us, that drives us crazy. We get angry. You might even say something disrespectful or hurtful.

But instead of letting the anger and the impatience get the best of us, what about flipping it? And saying, you know, Lord, This has really taken up time I didn’t have, but I’m gonna offer it to you as an act of penance. Those little inconveniences, those little difficulties that happen throughout all of our days. It’d be great opportunities to offer to the Lord in penance. We can find a great amount of grace so that we don’t go down that road of anger and impatience, but also gives to the Lord that little difficulty, that little inconvenience, whatever it is we’re offering up so that God can continue to transform us.In our lives. Not a sermon, not a homily, but just that little Jolt of Faith we all may need.
